JRL – Safety Recognition Award
In pursuit of Excellence
Hin Lee Contractor Trading Pte Ltd (HLCT) was one of the first contractor that started J108 when we are awarded site clearance and temporary facilities construction contract in Q4 2020. Thereafter, we were awarded precast yard set up, noise barrier construction, traffic diversion, sub/super structure for viaduct (4 piers), and 3.5m wide drains.
We were exhilarated when we received an email from Mahadevan Krishnan, HSE Manager for J108 project that we will be receiving “Best Safety Performing Sub-Contractor Award” at the celebration on 28th July. This award not only affirms HLCT management that they are on the right track but also encourages us to do better.
According to Ministry of Manpower (MOM) report, there were 46 workplace fatal injuries in 2022, nine fatal injuries more compared to 37 in 2021. This translated to a fatal injury rate of 1.3 per 100,000 workers in 2022, higher than that of 1.1 in 2021. In view of statistics, HLCT management pays extra attention to the safety aspects of work sequences and methodology, especially the well-being of our workers; one life lost is one too many.
Some new initiatives that HLCT adopted includes on-ground buddy system pairing fresh and experienced workers, pre-task talk involving workers who can voice their concerns and bounce ideas for safer work experience, providing better Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) eg. Anti Cut (Level 5) work gloves, on-site training by HLCT senior supervisors or WSHC, and care group among workers where they are able to reach out when they need someone to talk to.
Just as with any other projects, time is of the essence, however, without proper planning and safe execution we will not able to achieve project success. Project will only be successful if only our workers are able to go “Home Without Harm”; just like the slogan of McConnell Dowell.
Three-time word Formula 1 champion, Sir Jackie Stewart once said “it takes leadership to improve safety”. Despite all of his accomplishments and accolades over his nine-year career, one of his greatest achievements to racing was his rare, yet critical focus to moving the sport forward by improving safety for its drivers, their teams and spectators. Just like Stewart’s focus and commitment to safety regardless the background, nationality and trade we come from we should all have the same approach towards addressing safety. HLCT management is committed to the effort in making our workplace a safer environment.
HLCT would also like to take this opportunity to not only thank JHMCDJV for this affirmation but also congratulate them in achieving 3 milestones, namely (1) Launching Gantry (LG) No.2 Main Truss using 750-ton cranes to erect the 195-ton, 116m long main truss, (2) achieved 50% of segment castings, and (3) registered more than 1 million safe work hours without LTI.
